Goal
Students in middle school are just beginning to find out if Art is something that will interest them lifelong. Those that begin to flourish within Art often begin to prepare art portfolios for their life in high school and higher education, as well as outside the school walls. However, this is difficult to begin doing without any supplies at all within the classroom. As a teacher, I have spent the last four years teaching Art virtually, without a classroom of my own. Now that I am venturing back into the classroom, my 2D Art room is empty and bare. The students’ pieces of art need to show originality, creativity, and knowledge of technique and material. The goal of this grant is to have the supplies needed to create 2D projects of all types and designs. The students learn through state standards to develop competence and dexterity, through practice, in the use of processes, tools, and techniques for various media. This grant provides the material to experiment with different media and begin showing diversity in their artworks.
What will be done with my students
My student population comes from diverse households and 80% are on free or reduced meals, being the largest middle school in the district of close to or over 2,000 students. If the supplies are not available at school, most do not have the chance to experiment with different media at home. At school, in our 2D Art class, we teach our students how to do many forms of making meaning within their artwork, such as: printmaking, painting, drawing, and collage. In class, they recreate their ideas into artifacts on paper, canvas, or other flat surfaces. The outcome is a timeless piece of art that the students can be proud to include in their art portfolio or hang on the wall at home. Students are also able to enter their creations in art competitions that celebrate students making meaning.
Benefits to my students
The idea is for our students to begin building a diverse art portfolio, as well as gain a sense of empowerment and confidence in knowing they can create amazing artworks that showcase the student and turns their visions into creations.
