Goal
This project is designed to allow Marine Science II students (mostly 12th graders) to use a touch tank to teach different aspects of invertebrate ocean creatures to Marine Science I students (10th-12thgraders), as well as some Environmental Science students (9th graders). The touch tank will include live sea stars, sea anemones, whelks, horseshoe crabs and other ocean invertebrates.
What will be done with my students
This project will have three major benefits for my students: 1. During semester II, a major component of the Marine Science I curriculum is exploring and understanding invertebrate creatures in the ocean (ie. Starfish, sand dollars, crabs, sea anemones, etc.). They need to learn about their environments and their physiology. How do these creatures work on the inside and out. In the past, this has been done through a verity of methods, but never with live invertebrates. This will allow them to examine and explore the real thing up close. 2. Marine Science II students will be used to do the instruction. These students are seriously exploring Marine Science fields for college. The Marine programs in Florida universities are very competitive. This will give our students real world experience in exploring and teaching about ocean life. 3. The Marine Science students will also be presenting to some 9th grade Environmental Science students, who will be briefly covering ocean life as well.
Benefits to my students
1. Marine Science 1 - 81% of my Marine Science I students scored between an A and a C on the district semester II exam. My goal is that using these real world examples, among other additions to the classroom, 91% of the students will have the ability to score between an A and C on the district exam.
2. Marine Science II - My goal is that 95% of Marine Science II students that apply to Marine college programs will be accepted.
