Goal

My goal is for our students identified as having an Intellectual Disability to practice and apply life skills in the community, so that they will become more self-confident, independent, and ready to participate in the real world without fear. 

 

What will be done with my students

I will be giving my students equal opportunity as their typically developing peers, by taking them on one field trip each month for consistent application of life skills. Locations will be to common community places such as restaurants, grocery stores, movies, bowling etc. On these trips, the students will have the opportunity to use their mode of communication to order food, try new foods, use unfamiliar bathrooms, learn to ask strangers for help, learn etiquette and important social/communication skills. These field trips will encourage/increase vocabulary and world knowledge, encourage critical thinking and application of academics outside of the classroom. 

 

Benefits to my students

Having the ability to venture out into the real world, with support, will provide our students with disabilities the same access and opportunities as typically developing kids. Often, parents of kids with disabilities are unable or are too overwhelmed to continually practice skills in social settings. Although academics are very important for these students, we want these students to be able to have a successful life after graduation. Knowing how to self-regulate in public settings, knowing how to ask for help, knowing how to apply math skills, reading skills and writing skills outside of the classroom, learning how to apply their speech, occupational and physical therapy techniques in the real world, is the way these students have a chance at having a real job or the chance to enjoy community living after graduation. 

 

Budget Narrative

Movies:
$70 x 3 hours for bus = $120
$150 to rent out the theater
$160 for kids to practice ordering snacks

Bowling
$70 x 3 hours for bus = $120
$13 x 26 people = $338 entry fee

Aldi's and Chick-fil-a
$70 x 3 hours for bus = $120
$8x 20 kids to practice ordering food for lunch = $160

Publix:
$70 x 3 hours for bus = $120
$150 for students to practice checking out at register
$7 x 20 to practice ordering publix sandwiches = $140

Walmart:
$70 x 3 hours for bus = $120
$200 for students to practice shopping and checking out
