Goal
The ESE Department at Pierce Middle School is wanting to bring a hydroponic garden back to its full potential. Our students in our access points classes all receive their instruction on a modified, below grade level curriculum. There is currently a hydroponic garden on campus behind our Math/Health teacher’s classroom that needs some care. The teacher, Ms. Davis, would love to be able to incorporate the gardening process into her lessons to add some real life experience and skills into her students education. She has plans for lessons on measurement of the plants, predictions and estimations, basic math skills, problem solving, and data gathering. When they can relate the experience to their academics, it becomes so much more meaningful to the students. Ms. Davis also wants to incorporate the garden into her health class by discussing the therapeutic benefits of gardening, as well as healthy eating. The students would also be able to incorporate cooking the things they grow in our classroom kitchen and learn the benefits of healthy eating and cooking.
What will be done with my students
Not only will the Exceptional Student Education students benefit from the project, but the school community as well. This project could lead to a school based enterprise. The students could grow flowers and vegetables and sell them to the faculty and staff to assist in sustaining the project for the long term. Additional produce grown could be donated to a local food pantry to assist the community. The process of selling the items will give the students the opportunity to work on their math skills, basics of money and currency, which will be advantageous to them in the future.
Benefits to my students
The expected outcome is that the students learn valuable life skills while also working with their hands. There are so many benefits from having the garden up and running, not just for the students in our ESE classes, but for the school community as a whole.
Budget Narrative
We have the infrastructure already here for the garden. We are in need of some new supplies to get it back up and running. All of the current pots are rotted and can no longer be used. The tank is still good it just requires some new parts.
