Goal
To create community and deep conversation around a novel, we will all read a student chosen novel that represents our school community and use critical reading practices to discuss the novel and practice empathy and understanding for a wide range of diverse characters.
What will be done with my students
When we read diverse books, students from different backgrounds feel seen and validated. By discussing the characters, their life circumstances and their choices we practice empathy and grow in understanding. When our whole staff and student body read the same novel and engage in this practice, we build community and students gain critical thinking and reading skills.
Benefits to my students
We will read the novel at the same pace and I will host a weekly podcast to discuss each section. I expect students to be guests on the podcast and this increases their validation and increases the real-world learning as well as the impact of the reading. Our podcast is in iTunes and google podcasts so anyone can listen along and students find this engaging. This project will help Brandon build community and enhance student critical reading skills.
