Goal

Freedom Fest is an annual Literacy Field Day. Students from a neighboring Elementary School will come to Freedom High School to participate in a variety of literacy related activities. This year, our goal is to provide a children's books for each of the 400 visiting elementary students to take home.
 

 

What will be done with my students

A strong research base supports the importance of access to books. Children who have access to a variety of print materials in their classrooms, school libraries, town libraries, and at home, read more and read more widely, both for pleasure and for information. In addition, children who do a substantial amount of voluntary reading demonstrate positive attitudes toward reading, and these students tend to be the best readers (Calkins, 1996; Greaney, 1980; Krashen, 1994).
Students in an Intensive Reading class at Freedom High School will read the donated children's books to the visiting elementary students. This activity will provide an opportunity for High School students to practice their fluency skills while simultaneously serving as a model and literary mentor for younger students.  

 

Benefits to my students

All students will benefit from the opportunity to engage in activities that promote and celebrate the joy of reading. Children's books are a great way to showcase how reading can be fun! High School students will feel pride in their ability to read to young students. Elementary students will look up to their High School partner with admiration and visualize themselves as an older reader. 

 

Budget Narrative

A variety of high quality and culturally appropriate children's books with varying Lexile's - Enough for all 400 visiting elementary students to take home.
