Raymond James Financial - $1,000.00
Goal
To defray the cost for low-income students to participate in several national math competitions during the 2023-2024 academic year.
What will be done with my students
Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School is home to a Center for Gifted Studies as well as the largest housing-insecure student population in Pinellas County. The award-winning math team meets after school weekly to train for several national math competitions. The math team is seeking funds for competition registration, supplies, and reference materials.
Benefits to my students
The math team is a safe space for students who enjoy math to spend time after school. They are able to eat a healthy snack and enjoy the camaraderie of other like-minded students. They are able to explore mathematical topics in greater depth than the standard curriculum. Traveling to competitions in other cities develops self-confidence and leadership skills.
Describe the Students
The students on the MFMS math team are diverse. They are mostly gifted, but they have a wide variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds. Some have been English Language Learners. Because MFMS is a DHH magnet school, there is at least one deaf student on the team. Several students are autistic.
Budget Narrative
The estimated registration cost for the four competitions is $920.00. Any remaining funds will be used to purchase supplies such as pencils and calculators.
