Goal
All Pinellas County Schools share in the same mission ‘to prepare each student for college, career, and life’. Starkey Elementary is a Title 1 school, so we are continually seeking outside opportunities to ensure our students can compete with those who are more affluent than them. By implementing coding with Dash the Robot the students will have the opportunities to increase their knowledge of coding, problem solve, and explore careers.
What will be done with my students
DASH the Robot will be used in small groups for students to program Dash to move, sing, dance, flash its lights, respond to voices, make sounds, and even tell a story.
Using the apps, children learn coding concepts like sequencing, events, loops, algorithms, operations, and variables through self-directed play and guided challenges. Students can watch their virtual coding turn into tangible learning experiences in real time as Dash, with its performance and multiple sensors, interacts with and responds to its surroundings.
Benefits to my students
Coding is the fundamentals of computer science, and DASH the Robot will allow students to see coding in action. Students will be able to see how technology interacts with the real world, and how technology enriches the quality of life of society. Students will have an increased love for the STEM field and gain pride, confidence and joy. I’m excited to see the success of this cross curricular enrichment! Coding benefits reading gains as it helps students form connections and make meaningful discussions. Benefits in math include the student's ability to create, Watch, and solve complex problems. Science will be enhanced as this presents the foundation of computer science- as students can make the robot actually do things!
Describe the Students
80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status making us a Title One School. 20% of our third graders are gifted. 49% of our third graders are ESE. 21% our third graders are African American.
Budget Narrative
Funds will be used to purchase 5 Dash Robots with chargers. The app to control the Dash Robots is already available through Pinellas County Schools.
