Goal
To provide varying exceptionality resource students identified as having a deficiency in reading with decodable texts in which to practice newly acquired phonics skills.
What will be done with my students
Students receive daily small group, targeted instruction in phonics and phonics-related skills. Once a skill has been introduced in isolation and applied at the word reading level, students practice writing and reading words containing the target skill. Next, students will read text that is connected to the skill being learned. Decodable texts allow the students to practice repeat words, words containing the target skill and high-frequency words.
Benefits to my students
A student's ability to use phonics to decode words determines the student's ability to read individual words. Proficient readers attend to the orthography of words, while struggling readers depend on other cuing systems to determine unfamiliar words. The majority of ESE students on my caseload are missing key phonics concepts. Once learned in isolation, it is imperative that students have the opportunity to practice these skills in connected text that are designed specifically to practice phonics-based skills. Having on hand a variety of phonics based decodable books will ensure that students have the opportunity to practice new decoding skills in context.
Describe the Students
All students are ESE students receiving academic services in the VE Resource program at Ponce de Leon Elementary. Students qualify for services under a variety of exceptionalities including Other Health Impaired, Specific Learning Disability, Language Impairment and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The majority of students who would be using these materials are in grades 1-4.
Budget Narrative
Funds will be used to purchase decodable texts (3 sets - 72 books per set) totaling S957.00.
