Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Amgen Foundation - $561.00
Goal
The goal is to generate enthusiasm for science lessons about body systems and their functions. Fifth grade students will create a “wearable anchor chart” of the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. They will then add science concepts such as life cycles and moon phases to the back and sleeves of their shirts as science review.
What will be done with my students
Students will be excited when they find out they will have the opportunity to create their own guts T-shirt as part of their anatomy learning. The excitement will continue as they use glow in the dark paint to illustrate moon phases on the back, then add other science concepts to their shirts.
Unlike many other science projects, this one will not end up in the trash - they will wear it home when it is complete. This project will put the science concepts they need to know in front of them as their peers wear their shirts, and become a conversation piece as they wear theirs at school and at home.
Benefits to my students
The fifth grade students at James lost their science teacher in October. They are already struggling and will now have substitute teachers. As a historically low performing school, this makes it critical that students are engaged and supported. I expect that students who are part of this project will have a much better understanding of the science concepts and more interest in learning them.
