Goal
The goal is to have materials available that scholars can use to help regulate their emotions and help with their sensory needs. The scholars will be able to use these materials outside of the classroom while taking breaks or within the classroom in order to help them engage in instruction while having their sensory needs met.
What will be done with my students
Scholars will be given a choice of items and seating options that they can use. The items and materials will be given to the scholars after they are taught how to appropriately use the items. Scholars will have the opportunity to choose a different item/seating option if their needs are not being met.
Benefits to my students
The sensory materials will allow scholars to have choice when they need to have sensory needs met. The scholars will have alternative seating options that they can use in the classroom as well to help them focus and engage in the lessons. Scholars will have a space to take breaks when they need to be removed from the general education setting.
Describe the Students
Fairmount Park is one of the Transformation Zone schools within the district. We have a high population of low-income scholars. All of the scholars receive free breakfast and lunch. There is a high level of trauma that our scholars have faced. All of the scholars who we work with receive ESE services and have a variety of needs.
