Goal
Our primary objective for our K-5 scholars is to significantly enhance their academic proficiency by developing a more engaging and universally designed learning environment. This initiative specifically targets improvements in key areas such as reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning. We aim to achieve measurable outcomes, such as a 10% increase in test scores and class participation rates within the academic year.
What will be done with my students
To realize our goal, we plan to revolutionize our classroom settings by introducing flexible seating options. For K-2, we propose the use of scoop chairs, allowing scholars to rock gently, facilitating movement with minimal disruption. Research indicates such seating improves focus and engagement. For grades 3-5, pillows will be provided for outdoor learning sessions, a practice already embraced by our educators. These pillows will enhance comfort during outdoor lessons, integrating nature into our curriculum.
Benefits to my students
Flexible seating options like yoga balls and scoop chairs are shown to increase oxygen and blood flow, keeping scholars alert and focused. Additionally, outdoor learning environments contribute significantly to mental well-being, decreasing anxiety and boosting academic performance. Our approach is holistic, aiming to nurture both mental and physical health, essential for long-term academic success.
Describe the Students
We are a Title 1 school, predominantly serving students who begin their educational journey with lower proficiency levels. Our student body includes a diverse range of learners, including English as a Second Language (ESL) students, and those with varying academic abilities from high to low performers. The community we serve has unique socio-economic characteristics, which play a role in the educational challenges our students face.
Budget Narrative
To maximize the impact, we plan to purchase:
- 7 sets of yoga ball chairs, ensuring two per classroom.
- 8 sets of scoop chairs, adequately distributed among K-2 classes.
- 22 sets of cushions, providing each 3-5 grade class with a set of 24.
These quantities are strategically chosen based on classroom sizes and the number of students. The selected items are durable and represent a long-term investment in our students’ educational environment.
