Goal

My goal for this project is to expose gifted students to the power of programming using Sphero BOLT, an advanced round coding robotic ball. This will increase their skills in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), as well as allow them to express their creative thinking and curiosity.

What will be done with my students

My gifted students currently have a base knowledge of programming. They really enjoy hands-on, active learning and Sphero BOLT will provide this for them. BOLT is a versatile tool that provides a hands-on approach for students as they learn more about coding and robotics. They will engage in problem solving and critical thinking when using the robot, as well as apply their base knowledge of coding to move them to the next level. Sphero BOLT will also provide the opportunity for students to visualize mathematical concepts, conduct science experiments and even tell stories, all through programming.
BOLT has a programmable 8x8 LED matrix that allows students to express their creativity. They will learn to program this matrix to display images, messages and emotions. BOLT also teaches students how to use light sensors, magnetometers, otherwise known as compass sensors, and infrared (IR) sensors. All of this is possible through the Sphero Edu application where students use block coding to program BOLT.
 

 

Benefits to my students

Twenty-first century learners need to be exposed to as many real-world opportunities as possible to help them be successful in their future. Sphero BOLT will provide students with hands-on, critical thinking and learning that is connected to STEAM, creating potential future mathematicians, robotics engineers, architects, web designers, and the list goes on. I will know if students' block coding knowledge has improved by giving a pre-assessment before they begin programming the robots, as well as a post-assessment after using Sphero BOLT. This will allow me to plan for future programming units. Through the generous funding of this grant proposal, the opportunities for my gifted students are endless in helping to pave the way for the next generation of programmers as well as tomorrow’s leaders.
