Goal

The primary objective of this grant proposal is to secure funding for Town and Country E.S.'s Winter STEAM Family Night. This event aims to engage families in our community with interactive activities and educational experiences that highlight the fun and importance of STEAM disciplines. By fostering a collaborative environment, we aspire to ignite a passion for learning and creativity among participants of all ages.

What will be done with my students

The cornerstone of a robust education lies in the collaborative efforts between schools and families to nurture a child’s academic journey. Our Winter STEAM Family Night is a testament to this partnership, offering an enriching evening where students, families, educators, and administrators unite to revel in the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. This celebration is more than just an event; it’s a commitment to bolstering scientific literacy and fostering the intellectual curiosity that drives student success. 

 

Benefits to my students

Family Attendance Goal
To achieve a 20% increase in attendance from the previous year’s 167 attendees. Achieving at least 200 participants this year.

Staff Attendance Goal
Having a representative from every grade level is a fantastic idea to boost family participation in your Winter STEAM Family Night. Teachers play a significant role in motivating students and their families to engage in school events.

We will have five rotation stations for our Winter STEAM Family Night, a great way to engage students and families in hands-on STEAM activities that supports life science, engineering, changes in matter and art. 

 

Budget Narrative

The Winter STEAM Family Night will be up to be a fantastic event with a diverse range of activities that will surely captivate and educate attendees. Here’s a summary of the stations planned, along cost summary details.

Bunny Snow Globe Station:
Activity: Make your own bunny snow globe and learn why some materials don’t mix, creating the glitter lift.
Glycerin: This liquid helps the glitter float more slowly in the water. x 2 at $25.00
Snow Globes: The containers that will hold your winter scene. x 10 at $25.00
Glue: To seal the snow globe and secure the figures inside. x 2 at $15.00
Snow Globe Glitter: Special glitter that simulates falling snow. x 4 at $16.00
Snowflake Figure: To add a wintry touch to the inside of the globe. x 2 at $10.00
Bunny Figurine: The main feature of your snow globe. x 8 at $14.00

Snow Creation Science Station:
Activity: Provide a simple explanation of the freezing point depression and how salt affects ice.
Steel Cans: Collected from recycling efforts by families.
Rock Salt: To lower the freezing point of ice and create frost. x 2 at $17.00
Ice: Sourced from the school cafeteria.
Water: Available at the school.
Watering Cans: To be used for the activity and later donated to the garden club. x 2 at $5.00 (Home Depot)

Winter Gardening Station:
Activity: With the Junior Civic Association, discuss winter gardening in Florida and plant zinnias in cups to take home we will include a care guide for the zinnias and tips for winter gardening in the local climate. This station will allow participants to engage in the process of planting and take home a piece of the experience. Here’s a detailed list of the materials that we will need:
9oz Plastic Cups: Sufficient for each participant to pot their own zinnia plant. x 1 at $23.00
Soil: High-quality potting soil, enough to fill all the cups x 1 at $50.00
Zinnia Seeds: Packs of zinnia seeds for planting x 1 at $13.00
Zinnia Plants: Five mature zinnia plants to display and use as examples for the potting activity. x 5 at $5.00
Pots: Additional pots for the mature zinnia plants, which will be given away during the event. x 1 at $20.00

The engineering station focused on creating pipe cleaner snowflakes is a wonderful hands-on activity that illustrates the uniqueness of snowflakes while incorporating principles of design and symmetry. Here’s what you’ll need:

Pipe Cleaners: Assorted colors of pipe cleaners to allow for creativity. I have requested three bulk sets, one white at $5.00 and the silver and sparkle colored sets are priced at $8.00 each.

Snowflake Creation station:
The art station at our Winter STEAM Family Night, is where students will have the opportunity to create their own unique snowflakes using the following items:
snowflake cutouts x 1 at $13.00
glitter various options ranging from $13.00 a bottle to $5.00 a bottle
glue - I have this which I am reusing from a previous grant
paintbrushes x 2 at $5.00

I sourced the cost of the items for the Winter STEAM Family Night using Amazon Business and Home Depot because it aligned with my previous experience and the school’s purchasing process. I have available a print out of the Home Depot item codes if needed.
