Goal

The goal Building Community Through Art is to train 6-8 graders to create art that can be shared with all our stakeholders at school events such as open houses, field days, parent community nights, winter extravaganza, etc.

What will be done with my students

I will host a monthly club for 30 6th-7th graders and teach them art skills that can be shared with the wider school community. The club time is built into our regular school day for 1 hour each month. I am an art teacher. I will train the students with engaging hands on lessons. Two club sessions will explore the cultural significance of Henna and students will learn how to apply it to each other's hands. Two sessions will be dedicated to professional quality face paint. Two sessions will explore cutting and design methods to enhance the myriad of school t-shirts that students acquire during their middle school tenure. The final two club meetings will be focused on tie-dying techniques. Students will have the added benefit of real world application of their skills to "customers"/ attendees of our school events. My club students will become art ambassadors at our school events. I will incorporate the art standards of Enduring Understanding 1 VA.68.S.1 : The arts are inherently experiential and actively engage learners in the processes of creating, interpreting, and responding to art. Enduring Understanding 2 VA.68.H.2 : The arts reflect and document cultural trends and historical events, and help explain how new directions in the arts have emerged. Students will then have the opportunity to volunteer and share their new skills at school events that host parents, the rest of the student body, teachers, administrators and other school stakeholders. The Henna, face paint and tie-dye sessions will require the funding of this grant.

I plan to measure the success of this grant project. I will plan with our Lead Teacher at our July Calendar Meeting which school events across our annual calendar are appropriate to host Building Community Through Art Student Ambassadors. I will schedule my club students for each event. I will keep attendance records at each school event for the club ambassadors and calculate how many stakeholders they impacted. For example, I can keep records for how many participants received Henna or face paint from my club ambassadors per event. During our last club meeting in May, I will ask students to reflect on their club ambassador experience. How did they grow as an artist? How was it to present their art to community stakeholders? How can they continue to improve their public speaking and application of visual art skills?
