Goal
As the school counselor, I would like every student in every classroom to have access to a calm down space to help students learn self-regulation skills.

What will be done with my students
Students will be allowed to use a calm down space when they become overwhelmed, frustrated or they just need a small break. If awarded this grant, each teacher will be provided with a sensory bin to allow students access to calming tools. I will teach the teachers the steps necessary to teach their classes best practice for use of the calming area. This will allow the area to be used as a helpful tool rather than a class disruption. The calming area should help maximize time on task in the learning environment.
Benefits to my students
Last year we had 62 suspensions related to students not self-regulating their behavior. By default, suspensions lead to students missing instruction time since if they are not in school, in their own classroom, they are not receiving instruction. This project will increase the number of teachers in the school who have an area for students to calm down and return to their classwork. By teaching students skills to self-regulate their strong feelings and providing the space and tools necessary for them to develop the skills, we believe that we will see a 20% decrease in the number of suspensions for this school year.
Budget Narrative
24 teachers will receive a sensory bin to utilize in their calm down area. 10 teachers will also receive a rug for that area.
