What will be done with my students

As the school social worker and go-to person for IEP counseling, I've seen firsthand how helpful a calm down corner can be. It's more than a cozy area - it's a lifeline for students who need a moment to reset and find their balance. By giving students a place where they can work out their emotions in a constructive way, we're setting them up for success both in and out of school.

Students will develop better emotional awareness and regulation skills, leading to improved social interactions and overall behavior. Also, students with sensory processing challenges, anxiety, or other special needs will be more likely to want to come to school if they know there's a space for them to escape.

Benefits to my students

This calm down corner aims to reduce the number of behavioral issues among students referred for counseling by 20% within the first two quarters. We will track and compare the frequency of behavioral referrals/suspensions before and after the Calm Down Corner is implemented.

Budget Narrative

For this calming corner, I will need a soft rug, floor pillows, a floor chair, sensory toys, and posters. These items will be put to use in my office where I meet students for IEP counseling, groups, and attendance. I chose the above items because I believe I will get the most use out of them. The pillows have removable covers for washing and the sensory toys are simple but durable and fun to use.
