What will be done with my students

Cooking in the classroom can offer numerous benefits for students with special needs. Here are some key advantages:

Life Skills Development: Cooking teaches essential life skills such as following instructions, measuring ingredients, and understanding nutrition. These skills are crucial for fostering independence

Fine Motor Skills: Activities like chopping, stirring, and measuring can help improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Cognitive Skills: Cooking involves planning, sequencing, and problem-solving, which can enhance cognitive abilities. It also provides opportunities to practice math skills through measuring and counting.

Social Skills: Cooking in a group setting promotes teamwork, communication, and social interaction. Students learn to work together, share tasks, and support each other.

Sensory Experience: Cooking engages multiple senses (taste, smell, touch, sight, and hearing), which can be particularly beneficial for students with sensory processing issues.

Creativity and Autonomy: Following visual recipes allows students to make independent choices, encouraging creativity and decision-making skills5. 

 

Benefits to my students

1. Skill Acquisition:
Recipe Following: Ability to follow a recipe with minimal assistance, measured by the number of steps completed independently.
Ingredient Identification: Correctly identifying and measuring ingredients, tracked through pre- and post-assessments.
2. Cognitive and Motor Skills:
Sequencing: Successfully completing tasks in the correct order, evaluated through task analysis and observation2.
Fine Motor Skills: Improvement in tasks like chopping, stirring, and measuring, measured by timed trials and accuracy checks.
3. Social and Communication Skills:
Teamwork: Participation in group cooking activities, measured by peer and teacher evaluations.
Communication: Effective verbal and non-verbal communication during cooking tasks, tracked through observation and interaction logs.
Independent Living Skills:
Meal Preparation: Ability to prepare simple meals independently, measured by practical cooking tests and self-assessments1.
Safety Practices: Adherence to kitchen safety rules, evaluated through checklists and observation 

 

Budget Narrative

These funds will be used to purchase ingredients, cookbooks, and dinnerware that will be used to assist students with preparing small simple meals.
