Goal

To increase science state testing scores by 10% ending May 2025, by applying the Engineering process to build, design and code Spike Essential Robots using engaging lessons.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

What will be done with my students

I am the gifted teacher for two schools and will be teaching a Robotics Club to my gifted students and some other select students. I will teach them how to use the robotics kits and then we will use the STEAM process in science to build, problem solve and code the robots using our county curriculum lessons in science. At the end of the year, I will take them to the Robotics Competition.

The timeline will be a once-a-week one-hour lesson and building from October to April. The competition is in May of 2025.

The science curriculum states that

SC.N.5.1.1 Becoming a Scientist, Engineer, or Inventor Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific observations of various types such as systematic observations, experiments requiring the identification of variables, collecting and organizing data, interpreting data in charts, tables and graphics, analyze information, make predictions and draw conclusions.

SC.5.N.1.2 Explain the difference between an experiment and other types of scientific investigations. SC.5.N.1.3 Recognize and explain the need for repeated experimental trials.

SC.5.N.1.4 Identify a control group and explain its importance in an experiment.

SC.5.N.1.5 Recognize and explain that authentic scientific investigation frequently does not parallel the steps of the scientific method.

SC.5.N.1.6 Recognize the difference between personal opinion/ interpretation and verified observation. SC.5.N.2.1 Recognize and explain that science is grounded in empirical observations that are testable; explanations must always be linked with evidence.

SC.5.N.2.2 Recognize and explain that when scientific investigations are carried out the evidence produced by those investigations should be replicable by others

I am teaching the Scientific Process using Robotics to help students define a problem and attempt to solve the problem through trial and error. We will keep records of our investigations in a Robotics notebook. In addition, the district has written many lessons that help students understand the water cycle, plants and animals, force and motion, and many more science concepts. Teaching the Engineering Process with robotics will be so engaging and will enrich what the students are learning in the classroom. Science test scores will go up by at least 10% this year.

Benefits to my students

The student's science test scores will increase by 10% by May 2025. I will use a pre and posttest in science to show the increase. In addition to test scores, the students will learn to collaborate, and problem solve while applying the engineering process in science.

Budget Narrative

I will order 3 robotics kits from Amazon Prime at $352 a piece with a total of $1056.
