Goal
The goal is to promote Kindness, Acceptance and Inclusion among the students at Immokalee High School by encouraging them to join the Revolution for Inclusion. Inclusion helps everyone--in so many ways. It helps stop bullying & brings people together. More than 50 years ago, Special Olympics launched a global sports movement to break down barriers and end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities. Since then, this peaceful revolution has been changing lives all around the world. Now Special Olympics has expanded their events to include Video Gaming, otherwise known as eSports (Electronic Sports). Immokalee students are invited to participate in eSports competition by forming a Unified Team (Partner + Special Olympic Athlete) to compete against other high schools across the country. "The Revolution Is Inclusion"—and students are asked to be part of a powerful new generation that celebrates all differences, all abilities!

What will be done with my students
Students will form Unified Teams (Partner + Special Olympic Athlete) and register online with Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools eSports to represent Immokalee High School and join schools across the country in online tournaments. The two games they will be competing in are Mario Kart and Rocket League. Competition is once a week for one hour. The regular season is 8 weeks long, followed by League Playoffs and a Championship Tournament. I predict lasting friendships can come out of this type of unity among Unified partners and SO athletes!
Benefits to my students
By joining in the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools eSports League, students with and without disabilities will be playing cooperatively together on the same team. Students will be permitted to do what they love by giving them opportunities to earn recognition while developing priceless critical thinking and interpersonal skills. Some students are not physically gifted or capable of competing in traditional sports, but gaming gives them a chance to be part of a team and experience the thrill of competition. Who knows? Maybe one of these teams will earn the first trophy for Special Olympics eSports at Immokalee High School! Wouldn’t that make for an awesome high school memory?
