Goal
I know a lot of teachers use Play-Doh the first few weeks of school to help teach routines and procedures and to get some of the first week assessments done. It is an activity students are already familiar with, can use without any specific instructions, and used for any relating subject topic. I would like to implement more use of playdoh in my classroom and across Kindergarten as a grade level. Playdoh helps develop fine motor skills that a lot of the incoming kindergarten students are lacking due to lack of school exposure. They may also be lacking these skills because playdoh, pencils, crayons, and scissors may not be accessible in their home. Playdoh can encourage creativity and imagination along with social skills. Playdoh allows children to communicate about what they are making, asking for a tool another student has to share, and building relationships with one another.

What will be done with my students
Math- Students will use the ‘Learn to Count’ and Number mats to show the following standards through use of working with playdoh.
MA.K12.MTR.5.1- Use patterns and structure to help understand and connect mathematical concepts.
MA.K12.MTR.4.1- Engage in discussions that reflect on the mathematical thinking of self and others.
MA.K12.MTR.7.1- Apply mathematics to real-world contexts.
MA.K.AR.1.1- For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number.
MA.K.AR.1.2- Given a number from 0 to 10, find the different ways it can be represented as the sum of two numbers.
MA.K.AR.1.3- Solve addition and subtraction real-world problems using objects, drawings or equations to represent the problem.
MA.K.NSO.3.1- Explore addition of two whole numbers from 0 to 10, and related subtraction facts.
English Language Arts- Students will use the Alphabet, A-Z mats, and upper- and lower-case letter stampers and to show the following standards through use of working with playdoh.
ELA.K.C.1.1 Print many upper- and lowercase letters.
ELA.K.C.1.4 Using a combination of drawing, dictating, and/or writing, provide factual information about a topic
ELA.K.C.2.1- Present information orally using complete sentences.
ELA.K12.EE.6.1- Use appropriate voice and tone when speaking or writing.
ELA.K.F.1.3d Encode consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words.
ELA.K.F.1.4- Recognize and read with automaticity grade-level high frequency words.
Science- Students will use the ‘Our Natural World’ mats and all of the Playdoh tools to show the following standards through us of working with playdoh.
SC.K.N.1.2 -Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses.
SC.K.N.1.1- Collaborate with a partner to collect information.
SC.K.N.1.4- Observe and create a visual representation of an object which includes its major features.
SC.K.N.1.5- Recognize that learning can come from careful observation.
SC.K.P.9.1- Recognize that the shape of materials such as paper and clay can be changed by cutting, tearing, crumpling, smashing, or rolling.
Social Studies- Students will use the ‘In Our City’ mats and world, state and city mats we currently have in the classroom to show the following standards through us of working with playdoh.

Visual Arts- Students will use all playdoh tools and ‘Feelings and Emotions’ mats to show the following standards through us of working with playdoh.
VA.K.F.1.1- Experiment with art media for personal satisfaction and perceptual awareness.
VA.K.F.3.1- Create artwork that communicates an awareness of self as part of the community.
VA.K.H.1.3- Explain how art-making can help people express ideas and feelings.
VA.K.S.1.1- Explore art processes and media to produce artworks.
VA.K.S.2.1- Develop artistic skills through the repeated use of tools, processes, and media. e.g., media-specific techniques, eye-hand coordination, fine-motor skills
VA.K.S.3.1- Develop skills and techniques to create with two- and/or three- dimensional media.
VA.K.S.3.3- Handle art tools and media safely in the art room.
Benefits to my students
This project will benefit five Kindergarten classrooms with the necessary tools to practice different skills related to a subject area. For example, at the beginning of the year in Math we are learning about 2-D shapes and numbers 1-10. Students can use the Shape and Number/Counting mats to construct a shape and to show how many there are of one item. Later in the year, students will be able to use solve addition and subtraction real-world problems using the playdoh. Included in this project are shape mats, number mats and counting mats. These sets will allow students to practice learning these standards in another way rather than textbook work. As teachers, we incorporate multiple ways to teach to our students, using textbooks, workbooks, videos or white boards. Playdoh and the necessary tools will give our tactile learners another way and a better visual for them to see and understand.

All items purchased, including the Playdoh and tools, will be used by students to show what standard we are working on for a specific subject.
