Hillsborough Education Foundation - $1,830.00
Goal
The goal of this project is to provide a hands-on gemstone mining experience for our fourth graders, following our Science unit on Rocks and Minerals in February 2025.
Category
School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.
What will be done with my students
The students participate in pre-activities, the gemstone visit on the day of the field trip, and post-activities. This experience enhances and enriches the grade 4 rocks and minerals science standards.
SC.4.E.6.1 Identify the three categories of rocks: igneous, (formed from molten rock); sedimentary (pieces of other rocks and fossilized
organisms); and metamorphic (formed from heat and pressure).
Sc.4.E.6.2 Identify the physical properties of common earth-forming minerals, including hardness, color, luster, cleavage, and streak, color, and recognize the role of minerals in the formation of rocks.
Benefits to my students
The students will have a deeper understanding of rocks and minerals following this field trip experience. They will have a sample of rocks and minerals that they have personally mined for and identify them using the identification chart and properties of rocks and minerals learned in class.
75% of students will be able to identify rocks and minerals correctly based on their properties. Students will take the county created mini assessment to measure this goal.
