Goal

Research shows that students can only sit and pay attention for about 20 minutes. After that time, student's minds begin to wander, and they begin to not pay attention to what's being taught to them. I would like to be able to offer all of my students to opportunity to move at their seats while learning their multiplication facts.

What will be done with my students

My students often have a hard time sitting for extended periods of time. Research shows that their attention span is around 20 minutes but I see many students who struggle sitting still for even 5 minutes. They don't necessarily need to get up and walk around, they just need to be able to move some part of their body. Bouncy bands, Wiggle Seats, and fidget spinners are the answer to this problem when learning basic multiplication facts. With this grant I will be able to place Bouncy Bands on ALL of my desks and chairs so students can bounce and move in their seats as they are learning.
I have a few Wiggle Seats already and find them useful for students who need a little more movement and sensory stimulation. I would also like to add more Wiggle seats so students who need a little more movement while learning, will have the opportunity to wiggle and learn.
I would also like to add Multiplication Fact Fidget spinners for students to use as they are learning their multiplication facts. These fidget spinners combine movement while learning basic multiplication facts. Students spin the fidget and solve the fact it lands on. These spinners are self-checking so students can practice independently or during station rotations, they can practice with a classmate. 

 

Benefits to my students

4th grade students cannot be expected to sit for extended periods of time. In fact, their attention span is about 15-20 minutes. By adding Bouncy bands and Wiggle seats, students will be able to move around quietly, while still learning. Students can also use the Multiplication spinners while learning multiplication facts to stay engaged and focused. Bouncy Bands, Wiggle Seats, and multiplication spinners will be available to all students in my classroom this year and for many years in the future.
