Goal

Our school is located a quarter mile from the beach, yet with as much waste as we accrue from people who reside here and people who visit here, we are not doing our part as a community in recycling. Landfills are where most of our waste goes due to there being a severe lack of recycling abilities in our county and landfills are not only unhealthy for the environment, but also for us to breathe in the air around us. Recycling is such a crucial contribution for everyone, and to be able to instill understanding into elementary students is a great place to start. Walton County does not provide recycling for its residents, unless they relocate the recycling on their own. Due to the lack of recycling capabilities, many of our students don’t truly know the impact recycling has on the planet. By bringing recycling to our school, we will provide education on why it is important and the impacts that it has. The goal for this grant, is to be able to bring light to the importance of recycling and teach our students not only how and what to recycle, but provide opportunities for them to see first-hand, how recycling impacts our community and local environment.

What will be done with my students

The outcome for our school and all our students’ understanding of recycling and its capabilities are limitless by connecting the planet to products we use every day. Our students will be able to get hands on experience with impacting the planet by changing simple tasks in their day-to-day life here on campus. By bringing recycling to our campus, we will be able to instill a greater impact on our students moving forward into their future of creating a better world.

The anticipated materials that we will need for our conservation efforts will allow all classrooms on campus to separate their recyclable materials from their waste materials. While this isn’t the end goal for the conservation series at our school, it is the beginning step in starting our conservation journey. We must start somewhere, and we must start showing our students how impactful our fingerprint can be on the world around us.

If this grant is awarded, students at Van R Butler, would have the ability to not only begin their recycling journey, but also the collection and separation of recycling to continue to allow them to understand how items we use can be reused or recycled to prevent continued pollution on our planet. By being so close to the water at our school, many objects that we use daily end up in our waterways and ultimately harming the wildlife and the environment around us. We want to keep our beaches beautiful and clean and to do that, we must teach the next generation how to take care of the world we have.
 

 

Benefits to my students

Currently, there are no recycling bins on campus, nor do we have recycling pick up due to the County not providing it without cost. The students who attend the Conservation Club at school have created bins, but we currently do not have enough bins for all locations on campus. As of now, we have 18 Tupperware bins that the students have colored and glued the recycling symbol to, but these bins are not the long-term solution in separating recycling materials, nor do they support the greater recycling need at our school. This grant would allow the students the opportunity to obtain the necessary equipment to separate recycling and waste. We would then provide students with the education of separating the recycling and then bringing it to the proper location for appropriate disposal. By doing this, students would obtain firsthand knowledge of what it takes to recycle and why having recycling is accessible is so important. If students see the detriment of the environment without recycling, then they will feel more apt and better equipped to build a better future for themselves and others while helping to save the planet and its waterways. Recycling in our school is just one small step, but starting that step is crucial to maintaining our world in the future.  

 

Budget Narrative

The total purchase for this would be $1,492.22. This would include pop-up recycling bins as well as (4) 2 pack trash grabbers to make it easier for our students to pick trash up and recycle it or put it in waste bins while we are doing campus or beach clean ups. This amount would give us enough to purchase 1 pop-up recycling bin for every classroom, both offices and then both cafeterias as well. This would provide ample opportunities for both staff and students to recycle their items rather than just throwing it in waste cans.  

 

Items
