Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Simply, our goal is to motivate our students to read more. Some kids aren't born with a love for books, and that's where we come in! We're going to spark some interest in reluctant readers by buying some of the newest releases and adding more incentives for reading. An increase in reading will lead to an increase in AR tests passed, which will lead to helping more children in our community who are food insecure.

What will be done with my students

Our school participates in Read to Feed, a program funded by St. Joe, where $0.25 is donated to Food for Thought when students pass an Accelerated Reader comprehension test after they read a book. Some kids are too young to understand the impact this program has on their peers, or they have other tasks and assignments to complete, and AR falls to the wayside. We want to bring it back to the forefront by providing extra motivation to read. We'll do this by buying the most hot off the press, popular books and other items to use as rewards for finishing tests, like time spent building on a new Lego wall, or coming to the library for innovative fun like a "Snail Mail" station where kids can write postcards to inspirational adults in the school, a Minecraft building space, a puzzle space, and 3D book space.

Benefits to my students

Creating incentives for reading and testing will not only benefit our whole student body of over 900 students, because an increase in reading leads to more empathy, better concentration and improved brain function, but we would be helping our food insecure students by contributing more to Read to Feed. When students pass twenty-eight tests, we fund a backpack! It's a win-win!

Budget Narrative

Most of our $1500 budget will be dedicated to library time incentives. The remaining balance will not exceed the $664 and be spend on new books.
