What will be done with my students
ESE students will engage in the planning and preparation of a Christmas dinner for administration and teachers. Students will be taught essential cooking skills and food safety practices. Teamwork and social interaction among students and teachers will result in a celebratory dinner in an inclusive and supportive environment. The dinner is planned for Tuesday December 17, 2024 during the three lunch periods at Walton Middle School. If this grant is awarded, the project will cover a wide variety of academic skills that is covered in the access point standards to include math, ELA, and science. Students will also be working towards mastery of their social/emotional Individual Education Plan (IEPs) goals as well as independent functioning goals.
Benefits to my students
Benefits the ESE self-contained students will experience are related to many core curriculum areas such as math, science, and ELA, along with social/emotional goals, and independent functioning. Math principals will be covered by students creating nutrient fact cards to be placed on the table indicating serving sizes, calorie intake, sugar level, and fat percentage. Students will also practice math principals using measuring cups/spoons and following recipes to make the food for the dinner. English/Language Arts will be covered with students creating and typing up invitations for the dinner as well as writing out nutrient cards and name plates for the table. Science will be covered in the art of cooking, studying temperatures, and physical/chemical changes. Social/Emotional and Independent Functioning will be practiced with students learning how to greet guests, seating guests, and hosting the teachers/administration who attend the dinner. Once the dinner is completed, students will take part in taking down decorations, tables, and chairs, as well as cleaning, taking out trash, and washing dishes. 15 students from the self-contained classroom will participate in this project. One ESE classroom teacher, two aides, and an instructional coach will oversee and be responsible for the completion of this project. All products will be purchased at Sam's Wholesale food by the ESE teacher and aide.
