Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this project is to allow my students to practice what they know using alternative tools besides paper and pencil. Currently my class is measuring at less than 50% proficient in reading and math readiness skills. It is my goal that through permanent integration of these activities 80% of my class will reach proficiency. I teach Access points meaning many of my students have developmental delays or fall on the spectrum somewhere. Giving my students the opportunity to learn through games, puzzles, and alternative methods allows them to learn through the avenue of things they love! This will allow my students learning, and independence when practicing their academic skills!

What will be done with my students

These activities will be permanently integrated into our classroom routine. Our students participate in centers. This is meant to be a fun, engaging, independent time where the students can practice their skills. Unfortunately, teaching special education the materials often provided do not support the needs of my students who need different or multiple avenues of independent practice. My students often times spend a lot of time on technology, and this will give them an opportunity to practice their emerging academic skills in a new and exciting way, through games and collaboration daily! These games directly correlate with our core standards for teaching reading, math, social studies, and science. These centers will also allow my students daily practice of foundational skills. The "centers" routine is already implemented in my classroom but, upon fufillment of my grant we will take time as a class completing the centers together and taking time discussing how we properly treat and use them.

Benefits to my students

It is my hope that with this grant I will give my students fun and exciting ways to practice their skills. My goal is 80% of my class will test proficient in emerging reading and math skills on their district end of year assessments. Many of these centers come with progress monitoring tools which, I plan to use as my students progress through their centers and goals. It will also allow them time to practice independence which, is something some rarely get to have in other aspects of their day. My hope is I will be able to better progress monitor and give my students individual educations and meet their goals in fun and exciting ways! It is sometimes a special education teachers biggest challenge to engage her students, and it is my hope this project will do just that.
