Goal

Our goal is to teach 2nd grade students the basics and building blocks of financial literacy. Students will learn how to accurately count money while choosing to save or spend. Budgeting should be fun for eveyone!

What will be done with my students

Primarily, we will use the magnetic money manipulatives on white boards to exemplify how to add and subtract money. Once students have a decent understanding of what each money denomination is, students will get the opportunity to go SHOPPING! Students will start off with four quarters and rotate rooms for a "shop" rotation. Each classroom is a shop (EX: Jewry store, pet store, convivence store, etc...). Students will have the opportunity to earn more money by answering money math questions accurately. Students will be given a trifold with available purchase options at the beginning of the day and will have to chose to spend money at the current store or save their money for a following store. When a student choses to purchase an item, they will need to give appropriate funds and make sure they receive correct change.  

 

Benefits to my students

The M in STEM is math, and our students will get some valuable lessons in learning to add and subtract money. They will also learn valuable money management lessons along the way. First students will learn money denominations. With the magnetic money, students will be able to identify $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills. They will also lean to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Students will learn the basics of financial literacy and understand that money does not "grow on trees". All students will have the opportunity to budget money- earn, count, spend, and save. Students having cash registers will make their experience more realistic and fun. The paper money and coins will give lower level students a concrete manipulative to better assist understanding.
