Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal is to provide my students who do not communicate well or can't verbalize any response, but are able touch to respond, the opportunities in the classroom that will enable them to become successful communicators for the rest of their lives with a device that will enhance and ensure success in and out of the classroom. Also, the goal is to increase receptive and expressive language in the classroom when working on their classwork that requires the utilization of technology to answer or advocate for themselves. The iPads will be used on a daily basis and will have a great impact on ensuring increased communication of what they know, what they can learn and express needs as they will regularly use technology for the rest of their lives. iPad's will decrease frustration, anxiety, and other behaviors when it comes to the traditional pencil and paper tasks, allowing them more opportunities to reach IEP goals, as well personal goals.
The technology programs the school district has for their curriculum is available on newer versions of technology devices. Laptops increase frustration and confusion for student who can only respond by pointing or touching. The keyboard on a computer is a distraction for our non-verbal students and limits their attention to learning. Also, the device offers guided access to ensure students will not wander off from the programs or curriculum or touch buttons that are not part of the lesson. The programs on the devices that students will be using on a daily basis will be individualized to meet each student's needs and offer them to work at their individualized pace. For example, students who are considered to be below grade level will be assigned material based on the skills that they need to be successful, with opportunities to have repeated practice on a device that can provide automatic feedback and limit distractibility.

What will be done with my students

Each day during small group or one on one instruction, the iPad will be use for reading and math. Each day the students will utilize technology programs tailored to meet their individualized needs. Each day the iPad will be utilized for receptive and expressive needs of the students as well with selected ACC apps/programs such as Sono Flex Lite, similar to a single AC device.
During small group reading, students will use the programs, Teach Town and Reading Eggs on the iPad device. In Teach Town and Reading Eggs, the students practice the skill on the programs and the programs continues to keep data. The program includes various skills levels and offers differentiated instruction, and provides repeated practice for mastery.
During small group math, students will use the technology programs, Teach Town and Splash Learn on the iPad device. These program allows for the lessons to be individualized and the programs for each student continues to keep data. I can assign specific topics or lessons to each student, and it allows them access to their own individual learning path.

Benefits to my students

Previously on past iPads student were able to do a few things but mostly communicate. Since student can manipulate a programs on an iPad due to their interaction being by touch, I am positive they can be successful, and definitely more engaged and willing to participate without behaviors of frustration and anxiety on a newer more update software that can handle our curriculum. I currently have 2 outdated devices that will not run our programs and curriculum. Our students are not thriving due the unavailability of programs for their mode of learning. The new technology (iPad) will increase the amount of time that each student spends on the programs, learn academic skills as well as social and emotional skills, and feel successful. Due to the individualized nature of iPads, I believe that all of my students will benefit from increased access through technology to these programs and decreased frustration. My ultimate goal is to increase student academic, and receptive and expressive skills to be able to be more a part of the whole classroom experience as well as in their own community. The iPads will bring us closer to that goal, by giving them a better opportunity to be engaged in their surrounding. This grant will benefit students for years to come as we continue to grow, learn and thrive.
