Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Reading well helps students break out of the generational poverty cycle. Being a successful reader significantly increases your chances of getting a well-paying job. Struggling readers at the WISE Center are our number 1 focus. Difficulty reading causes struggles in all subjects. We would like to enhance our students impression of reading. This will enable them to learn to love reading or at least to work harder at it. Students today are very distracted by technology; movement will help calm that down.
By the end of this school year, we would like to see a 15% increase in mastery of our students reading skills such as fluency, decoding, and comprehension of literature. This includes newspapers, magazines, poetry, dramas, and stories (fictional/non-fictional) as tested by the FAST ELA/Reading test.

What will be done with my students

Implementing moveable chairs makes small and whole group instruction a multi-sensory process that is both pleasing and explicit. Using moveable chairs allows students to focus better on their school programs like Exact Path, Study Island, and Common Lit.
Furthermore, using sites like Rewordify or Book Share enable students to read the same story as their peers by changing the Lexile of the story they are reading to their independent reading level. Students choose a level they can understand so that they are reading the same information as their peers.
Flexible seating allows students to feel vested when allowed to choose their own chairs. Being allowed to fidget in their chairs actually boost the brain and improves learning loss.

Benefits to my students

Seating with built in movement allows students to become more focused which allows students to solve real-world problems with reliabilty. The end all, be all goal is for students to improve their reading abilities.
In specific, our ESE students (100% of our population) gain greatly from focusing better on literature which enables them to collaborate and connect with their peers.
