What will be done with my students
Last year I applied and was awarded a grant and quickly realized it was a great way to increase positive relationships in my classroom. The students were more engaged and had better relationships with one another after using teamwork to gain a deeper understanding of story elements and phonic patterns.
Having more LEGO in the classroom will give my students the opportunity to use Lego to answer questions based on Florida Best Standards and ALDs in the classroom. This approach will be in addition to the written responses they are expected to give in order to assess understanding of a topic.
Lego can also be used as part of multi-sensory approach to phonics during whole group, small group and Tier 2 instruction, using Lego to tap or spell out CVC words and sounds.
Benefits to my students
Having Lego in the classroom will benefit to my students because they will be able to build and explain their answers to the most common questions/standards in class. Low preforming students typically have low confidence in giving both verbal and written answers in class.
Having a Legos STEM component in class can help the students build their answers and then use that confidence to answer or explain their thoughts on the ALD we are working on in class.
I also want to use LEGO sets as incentives for reaching academic and behavior goals,
I hope to see a decrease in negative behaviors that stem from lack of understanding or frustration about not being able to put thoughts into words. I also should see my higher preforming students be more engaged through out review of known information.
