Goal
Accommodate diverse learning needs with versatile and adaptable seating options. To offer our ELA, Math and intervention classes options to increase their ownership of their learning environment.
Category
Class Furniture - Carpets, choral risers, transitional seating/desks, etc.
What will be done with my students
In Mrs. Carls second grade ELA classroom at Freeport Elementary, as of the first state testing date, has 62% of students scoring below state ELA standards. In Mrs. Williams Math class 78% of the students scored below the state Math standards.
Currently, four of Mrs. Carls students have access to true flexible seating in the classroom, others choose to work on the floor or with some older pillows. Mrs. Williams has one set of bouncy chair feet donated by a parent. Mrs. Carl has some borrowed items from special education teachers to test in my second-grade classroom. With flexible seating options of our own to utilize in our classrooms we can better serve the needs of my high need students. In our classrooms there is a high correlation between low preforming and a high drive for movement and flexible seating.
Benefits to my students
Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Many of my low performing students have difficulties learning with traditional seating. Research by Kayla Dornfeld from Edutopia shows that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. We have seen a positive increase in classroom management with otherwise problematic children utilizing borrowed flexible seating. We would love to be able to purchase some of the items for own classrooms use, so more of our students can benefit from the use of flexible seating.
Budget Narrative
In our second grade classrooms at Freeport Elementary, as of the first state testing date, we have over 50% of students scoring below state standards.
With flexible seating options of our own to utilize in our classroom we can better serve the needs of high need students. In our classrooms there is a high correlation between low preforming and a high drive for movement and flexible seating. Mrs. Carl teaches two ELA classes and three groups of intervention students, Mrs. Williams teaches two Math classes, having flexibility in seating options would greatly change the classrooms in a positive direction.
