Goal
In a state where standardized testing often drives our instruction, keeping kids interested, focused and motivated is every teacher's desire. We all know that kids love to play games. The game Scrabble will be used in any capacity I can. They will be used to help my students with weekly spelling words and grammar skills at centers. Students will be able to make words and alter words, changing their spelling, meaning and tense.
What will be done with my students
I cannot wait to use the letter tiles to enhance my students' vocabulary. I am going to use the tiles to introduce the vocabulary for a new concept, skill or book. In addition, students can take home tiles each night to "play" and make a new word with their family. The word, along with the definition, will be presented in class the next day and added to the word wall to be used in creative writing. Scrabble will definitely strengthen my students' language arts skills, but will also help them to be better thinkers. I look forward to the day where my students can teach these new skills to the kindergarteners and first graders at our school. All of the kids will be having so much fun that they won't realize how much they are learning!
Benefits to my students
My students are eager. My students are individuals. My students are amazing. I teach eighteen second graders in a Title 1 school. My class is made up of mostly gifted and high-achieving students, and I am always searching for new, exciting, innovative ways to pique their interests. In addition, I get students from two other classrooms throughout the day because they also need to be challenged. Our school is currently overpopulated and resources are scarce. All extra funding is being poured into hiring new teachers and assistants. Although we are fortunate to have all the books and materials we need to teach, the funding is just not there for the "extras." Being creative with our students at my school might be an easy task, but implementing our creativity with the necessary tools is the ultimate challenge. Learning through games can also benefit the families in my school's community. In a highly populated ESOL school like ours, parents are always searching for tools that can help.
Budget Narrative
I have 18 students so I would need 9 games (2 players each). The extra tiles are for lost letters and also to be used at home for vocabulary exploration.
