Goal
That 80% of our students will be exposed to technology (Ipad/tablet devices) as they participate in classroom activities and demonstrate an increase in targeted skills - daily living skills, decision-making, self-advocacy and self-esteem - as measured by rubric skills and/or an adapted AIEP Evaluation Chart. The ultimate goal is to prepare our students to function more independently in the community, through the use of technology as necessary.
What will be done with my students
The students will :
1. Use technology (ipad) to research information about charms
2. Research other cultures and compare with what they know about charms
3. Brainstorm and research persons in own culture who uses a particular object as a "good luck"charm
4. Identify 2/3 specific charms that express themselves
5. Identify 2/3 different charms to create patterns to sharpen patterning and counting skills
6. Use available free apps to practice academic skills (e.g. audio/interactive books) as they touch and learn
7. Use the ipad to respond (communicate visually) to questions in real time
8. Use fine motor skills to create fashion charm bracelet
9. Create message/ to correspond with charms chosen
10. Use Ipad calculator to compute simple math/money problems
11. Students will learn cooperative skills as they work in teams to assemble finished product
12. Students will practice self-advocacy and decision-making skills as they accept leadership roles to decide patterns and number of pieces per item or other tasks designated by instructor
Benefits to my students
During the 90's, many of our students with disabilities (autism spectrum, developmental/intellectual, TBI, CP, down syndrome), had access to touch screen technology by using an external screen mounted onto a computer monitor. This was very frustrating as sometimes it never worked as it was intended. Computer upgrade and operating systems are no longer compatible with our software. Major improvement in touch-screen technology is being utilized to a great extent and some of our students have no access which will help to enhance their learning in myriad of ways. Studies have shown that students are able to practice academic skills independently while staying on task. Assistive features let students communicate visually by reading words/sentences selected. Use of the ipad will encourage non-verbal students to respond to questions in real time as well as actively listen to stories with animation.
Students will be able to work at their own pace with some level of privacy and achieve independence.
Students with sensory challenges will be able to manipulate the touch screen with little to no effort. A simple tap or double tap can zoom or magnify material, making it easier to see. Students who are verbal can speak directly into the device and have their speech converted into text or recorded/played back.
There are several academic apps which can be downloaded for free, thus eliminating the need to purchase software/apps.
Budget Narrative
It is envisaged that the Ipad will provide multi-purpose activities that will complement the students' experience as they continue to learn life skills and pre-entrepreneurial skills. Suppliers have been carefully researched for the best price, user-friendly device, and easy access to available academic apps with compatible features. There will be no maintenance costs associated with this device as internet service (WI-FI) is provided on site. Several of the apps to be used are available off-line and can be accessed without internet (if the need arises).
