Goal

I am requesting funding for musical manipulatives to help reinforce literacy skills. My goal is to help ALL children excel by using MUSIC as a motivational tool to help with comprehension and recall with reduced anxiety and frustration and less aggression. Retelling is so much easier when words are set to music with the aid of rhythm instruments. MY GOAL is to provide a fun and happy environment. Music helps boost engagement and motivation and allows learners to become happier. We, as a class, through student collaboration and involvement, will use musical manipulatives to help capture their attention in a peaceful learning environment which leads to more student participation and better self-esteem with a high level of interest and engagement. MUSIC helps solidify a foundation of concepts. A strong foundational grasp of vocabulary helps students to make connections to larger concepts. I can establish positive relationships and experiences within an exciting place to learn....That is MY Kindergarten Classroom!! 

What will be done with my students

This GRANT would be permanently integrated and directly connects to our Literacy Block (CKLA). Music enhances memory recall. MUSIC AND MEMORY have a powerful, well established connection within our brain. Incorporating dance and music helps to activate information mentally, physically, as well as emotionally. Composing "content-based learning songs" together with specific learning content is then put into rhyme and rhythm and these elements improve memory recall. MUSIC helps students recall definitions/relationships, and helps develop a foundation of vocabulary. Structured information through patterns helps to PREDICT. Incorporating the use of ribbon bells, triangles, rhythm eggs, rhythm sticks and MUSIC, emotional senses are activated, creating an enhanced memorable experience. 

Benefits to my students

Activities such as singing along, clapping, dancing, and chanting are ALL signs that children are engaged in MY LESSON and actively learning. These MUSICAL ACTIVITIES are things that ALL students in my class can enjoy with NO Language barriers as an extra bonus! Educational effects from MUSIC tied into the Literacy Block- help bridge the gap of children with Special Needs as well as Non-English Speakers, aiding in self-confidence. Struggling and shy learners respond and retain information when presented in a song/chant with rhythm/rhyme. Music is a motivational tool as well as a universal language that ALL CHILDREN positively respond to. It helps to inspire and instill knowledge.
