Goal

Through this project, the students will apply their knowledge of teamwork, rhythm and patterns to the study of how different types of sounds are created while also learning the science behind building their own instruments. This project will utilize strategies they are learning in their general classrooms about spatial awareness, scientific studies about sound waves, and the Engineering process used to build the instruments. It's a great cross-curricular musical experience that gives the students something they can take ownership of. 

 

What will be done with my students

Students will be choosing their own materials to add to the buckets to make different percussive sounds. Then, with the teacher's assistance and facilitation, they will assemble all of the parts, tie on their straps, and learn the proper sticking for a drum line. Students will also then experiment with creating drum patterns and learning to play together as a group with the rhythms they create. 

 

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this project is that students learn real-life application of the rhythm patterns and proper playing technique they learn in their music class while also utilizing Science, Math, and Engineering strategies they learn in their homerooms. It's a fun way to build unity among the students and actively engage them in the music-making process on a deeper level. It also opens the door to performance opportunities and membership in an additional county-wide music community outside of their school. 

 

Budget Narrative

I will be providing drumsticks for all of the students, but these are the materials needed to have enough drums for all 4 classes of 3rd grade to build. The buckets are the drums and the rope is for the strap to go around the students' necks.
