Goal
First graders will read and research biographies about Famous Americans, compare and contrast their lives, discuss a character trait, make a Bottle Person American, and publish their book with Student Treasure Publishing. As a Culminating Activity, the Principal, Assistant Principal, and their Parents will be invited to a Biography Author’s Tea where students will be dressed as Famous Americans costumes and read their published books to a live audience during school hours. An article of this project will be published with local newspaper The Pompano Pelican with a picture of my students holding their published books and bottled person.
What will be done with my students
Integrating Famous Americans, Reading, Speaking, Listening, Research, and Writing with an integration of Social Studies, the first grade students will learn how to improve on their fluency, writing skills, research skills, and learn about people from the past who have shown character traits of honesty, respect, responsibility, cooperation, courage, kindness, fairness, and loyalty. My first grade students will read their published biographies to second and first grade students during school hours. Each student will read and select a biography, research key facts about the person’s life, illustrate the pictures, write the facts about the Famous American, compare and contrast their lives, and discuss a character trait in their published book from Student Treasures Publishing. These published books come back with a hardcover, student’s cover design, students written work, and students’ real picture and name on it. As a Culminating Activity, the Principal, Assistant Principal, and their Parents will be invited to a Biography Author’s Tea where students will be dressed as Famous Americans costumes and read their published books to a live audience during school hours. At Walmart, I will get the water bottles, circular small foam for heads, yarn, googlie eyes, felt paper, and fabric to have students make the Famous Americans from water bottles and the supplies listed. In addition, I will get clothing for students who need it to wear at the Biography Tea.
Benefits to my students
Purpose/Goals of Project - Provide project objective and state specifically what students will learn and be able to do as a result of this grant. Provide data driven measurable objectives.: The Goal of Social Studies Standard 2 Historical Knowledge: SS.1.A.2.4
Identify people from the past who have shown character ideals and principles including honesty, courage, and responsibility
As a National Board Renewal Certified Teacher, I model research, writing, and reading
comprehension strategies using interactive websites on my Web Page at: http://classjump.com/m/missammonswebpage1. This project is in compliance with the School Improvement Plan (SIP) for reading and writing goals and activities. The students will use the American, Equality, and Easy Biographies to learn all about the American lives and contributions to American Heroism as well as achievements of people of the past who have shown character traits that have made a difference in America. The students will use the wireless laptop cart and computers to research additional facts at:
http://www.goldridge08.com/firstbios.htm. During writing small group instruction, I will work with my students in my groups to read and write about their biographies for publication. After the student writes a page, the group will immediately listen to them read. This builds fluency by integrating, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This helps motivate my students to read better. At the Wireless Listening Station and CD & Cassette Player the students will listen to Famous Americans Biographies on cassette or CD. The students will fill out graphic organizers about key facts of the person’s lives. Each student will record their voice reading their book and listen to it at the Wireless Listening Center.
Project Evaluation. For Raz-kids.com the kids will use the internet to read books. Raz-kids.com can be used in school or at home to read books on independent reading level, listen to books, and take a reading comprehension test on the book.
