Goal

This project is all about reusing, repurposing and beautifying our school and community. As a winner of the P3 Challenge last May the environment is very important to me. I am a true steward of my environment and so are my students. I focus my classroom activities on reducing our carbon footprint and repurposing what we already have. At the same time I am teaching my students about their community and giving back. My students and I will reuse and repurpose old tires, stepping stones, bottles, fabric and food grade drums to make a positive impact on our community. Beautiful planters, mosaic stepping stones, floral arrangements, animal bandanas, and unbelievable rain barrels are products that will result from this recycling initiative.  

What will be done with my students

My project idea to use the repurposed items that we already collect in my art room but to get some additional supplies to help us implement the environmental efforts that we are making for our class and community. My students and I will refurbish old tires and stepping stones into new beautiful pieces of artwork that will beautify our school campus. The tires will turn into amazing painted and designed planters in which our students will plant and take care of flowers and herbs. The stones will be pulled from our campus to be made into beautiful mosaic pieces of art. My students will glaze the tiles that we glue to our stones. After they are grouted and cleaned they will go back onto our campus as a reminder of our fantastic work. The bandanas are something my students and I create and cut from recycled fabrics to help shelter animals get adopted out into the community. My students and I will cut, design and decorate bandanas with sayings like “adopt me!” on them so they will look cuter when people come to look at them. This actually increases their chances of finding a forever home. Another repurposing project we will take on is making plastic bottles into gorgeous flower arrangements to share with our community. Students will use sharpies to color bottles that will ultimately become floral arrangements. Finally, my students and I will take food grade drums and make them functional by attaching a spout and a hole on top for rain to enter the drum. A skim bucket fits into the hole blocking bugs and leaves. My students and I will also beautify these drums with paint and sealer to leave lasting images of beauty on the drums. These drums will be used on our own campus to help with classroom gardens as well as be filtered out to our community. All of these projects are teaching my students that we all can give back and at the same time we can help our environment by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Budget Narrative

All these items are necessary to continue my recycling program at my school. I have already written grants for flower boxes and tires. My students and I love to help the community and to do so we need to continue to get supplies as well as get donations and give donations back.
