Goal

Our goal is to build and maintain garden projects on our campus.

What will be done with my students

My students have started planning three gardens for our campus. One team is working on a Florida Native project, one team is focused on a food garden, and one team is investigating the intersection of technology and agriculture and opportunities for the incorporation of hydroponics, aquaponics, and other systems in our gardens.

Benefits to my students

Students are taking authority of the work and learning how to collaborate to achieve common goals. They started with the idea that they liked gardening, but they are learning that gardening is more than throwing plants into the ground. They are using math to measure and plot the spaces, estimate cost, and set budgets. They are writing proposals to submit to our administrative team, PTSA, and SAC. They are figuring out what plants work best in what environments and reviewing scientific concepts to promote our success. This project benefits my students by utilizing their knowledge across disciplines for a practical (real-life) application. Middle school is a challenging time socially; this project has brought together a diverse group of students and provided supported social opportunities.

Describe the Students

Our group is a mix of ESE, ELL, 504, low performing, and high performing students in all three grade levels (6, 7, and 8). These are students who rarely share academic space but have found common ground gardening.

Budget Narrative

The requested items are the basic tools we will require to sustain the program long-term. The students determined these items would support the various planned projects rather than any one project and will benefit the program year after year even as plans grow and change.
