Goal

My goal is to provide each classroom (PK-5) with a simple, compact box of calming tools to assist students who are struggling to regulate their emotions. The box will be similar to the photo with more items to choose. 

 

What will be done with my students

Each teacher (will be provided with a pencil box filled with calming tools and a "how too" sheet to assist students to regulate big emotions. I will train all students to use the tools as part of our school-wide initiative to use Zones of Regulation to regulate emotions and behavior. I plan to teach Zones of Regulation concepts throughout the school year. Part of that program includes teaching coping skills to regulate emotions. Included in the kit will be cards with coping skills outlined so that student can choose a skill and use it to regulate. Examples include, deep breathing, drawing, using a tool, stretching, counting, coloring, and more. Teachers will encourage students to use the calming tools whenever they need a moment to regulate.
This is a one-time purchase that teachers can permanently integrate and use yearly. I would like to implement this as soon as possible and at least by the end of the first semester. 

 

Benefits to my students

In the past few years our youth have experienced a mental health crisis. Student struggle to cope with daily stressors. Student who are not emotionally regulated cannot learn. They are distracted by feelings and cannot engage in learning.
There are so many influences on their emotions throughout the day. Students may feel disappointed, frustrated, confused, angry, and so many other emotions, depending on circumstances that occur. Some students arrive at school with big emotions after a rough morning at home. Some students experience academic struggles and become frustrated. Others have disagreements with friends at recess or lunch and become preoccupied and cannot calm down enough to learn.
Many students lack the skills to cope with unpleasant situations, or overwhelming feelings. Through monthly social emotional learning lessons that I provide to students I teach them coping skills, resiliency skills, conflict resolutions skills and much more.
With the availability of a calming box, students are able to take two minutes to regulate their emotions so that they can be available to learn. A student experiencing strong emotions is a distraction to themselves but also to others. A quite, calm, safe area to regulate normalizes the need to use coping strategies, teaches self-regulation and encourages good mental health practices. A two minute break will assist students to be engaged in a full day of learning, rather than spending two hours dis-regulated and dis-engaged in learning.  

 

Describe the Students

My school is comprised of a variety of students. We have 75% of student on or above grade level. We have ESE students, gifted students and ESOL students. We have 5 PreK classes, four of those are blended; Gen-ed and ESE. All children (and adults) experience strong emotions and dis-regulation. The beauty of this program is that it addresses the needs of all students in our school.
