Goal
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Flexible seating gives students the power to move as needed for focus. It also allows students to work apart from the groups when needed, such as not feeling successful within a group.
What will be done with my students
Students will be given a choice as to the type of learning environment that works best for them. They can select the "seating" option that works best for them. These options would consist of seats that allow movement, seats within groups that encourage collaboration, and seats apart from groups that allow students to work independently but remain on task.
Benefits to my students
1. The Power of Choice: Having a choice in seating allows the students to feel empowered and will enable them to have some control over their environment. It also allows them to have a choice in where, how, and with whom they work with which in turn builds higher-order thinking skills.
2. Better Physical Health: Students need to be able to move around during the day. When using flexible seating, they are allowed to rock, lean, stand etc. This increases oxygen to their brain which in turn allows them to be more alert and focused.
3. More Opportunity for Collaboration: When giving students a choice of how and where they sit in the classroom, collaboration can occur more efficiently.
4. Learning Commitment: Studies have shown that students who are able to move around during class are more likely to pay attention and retain information than those who are confined to a desk.
5. Sensory Needs Met: Flexible seating stimulates students’ sense of touch. Students with ASD, ADHD, or ADD benefit from this type of seating because it allows them to move freely while focusing on the task at hand. This helps processing information easier. Sensory input will enable students to be less disruptive because they are able to use excess energy. This also allows them to focus on the tasks and cuts down on disciplinary incidents and behaviors.
6. Flexible seating provides an extra layer of intervention for students that choose to work independently at any given time for any given reason. This is especially powerful when dealing with our older male students as they may act out to avoid tasks.
Describe the Students
Brooker Creek has traditionally high achieving students. However, ESE students, and especially male students, often struggle to remain on task and make learning gains that match their non-ESE peers. This subset of students remains a focus for the school.
Budget Narrative
These items will give many different options of flexible seating my students. Not all seating types are suitable for all students and the variation will help the students find the solution that works best for them.
