Goal
Our goal is to expose the student to experiences and places that will help them learn about life outside of the school setting and to experience our community and the world around us. We hope to foster an appreciation for novel experiences while sparking interests in possible vocation opportunities. Community outings offer exposure to various sensory stimuli which helps our students adapt and become comfortable in different settings. Participating in CBI outings promote a sense of belonging, inclusion and acceptance while improving quality of life.
What will be done with my students
The Bridge Program is our adult transition program at Yulee High School. We focus on job, life, and social skills in the classroom, at various job sites, and on our weekly Community Based Instruction outings which take place at a variety of locations in the area. We use school vans to transport students and we instruct them on safety in a vehicle, in a parking lot, and crossing the street.
On our outings we practice communication skills such as requesting admission tickets, ordering off of a menu, asking questions while listening for answers, plus speaking up for ourselves and expressing our needs and wants in an appropriate manner. We learn to take turns, wait in line, and behave according to social norms to the best of our abilities. Different venues require different behaviors, for example we learn that we must be quiet and sit still at the Symphony while we can jump and shout at a Hockey game.
Benefits to my students
The students will benefit by learning transportation and safety skills. They will learn to make independent choices and communicate more effectively. The students will benefit from learning appropriate behaviors in different environments while trying new things. They may discover a new passion which will help us to better place them in jobs that they might enjoy. Going out to public places can enhance our overall well-being by helping us feel more comfortable in new surroundings.
Budget Narrative
We currently have six students in the Bridge Program. The number of students is expected to increase in the next school year.
With the current 6 students this grant will cover two CBI trips per month over ten months at a cost of $10.00 per student per trip for a total of $1200.00 for the school year. We hope to cover the cost of our other CBI trips by fundraising and with parent contributions.
