Goal

I would like a grant to buy materials to create a calming/ reset/ mental health therapy room in the school social work office for students who are in distress during the school day.  

What will be done with my students

While the district has supplied me with tools to aid students in distress, I believe that creating a calming/ reset/ mental health room would create an environment that will allow students to regulate their mental health more effectively and efficiently. One way this grant could help students is to be able to purchase a tent with comfy floor padding to practice self-regulation skills. Having a sound machine to block out noise will allow students to speak without outside noise interruption. Non-traditional seating for students such as large bean bags, a couch or a swinging chair allows students to feel comfortable enough in their environment when in distress to help their somatic nervous system to relax. Lighting such as twinkle lights will allow for less stimulation than traditional overhead lights. Calming sensory lights such as a lava lamp soothes students in distress. Students in elementary school often feel most comfortable on the floor, and a padded rug would allow them to play therapeutic games on the floor. Additionally, some wall colors have been found to be scientifically more calming than others. It may benefit the student’s health to paint the walls a more soothing color. 

Benefits to my students

It is my hope that turning the school social worker office into a calming/reset/ therapeutic room allow the student regulate their emotions and to continue with their educational pursuits in a more productive manner.

I got these prices off of amazon. Some of them were on sale, but I listed the original price, as I'm not sure the item would still be on sale should I receive the grant.
