What will be done with my students

Through this grant, we will:
1. Equip Classrooms with Microwave Raku Technology: Provide schools with state-of-the-art microwave kilns and the necessary materials for raku firing.
2. Develop and Implement a Comprehensive Curriculum: Create engaging lesson plans and hands-on activities that blend artistic creativity with scientific inquiry, allowing students to explore the interplay between microwave energy, ceramic materials, and artistic expression.
3. Foster STEM Enthusiasm and Skills: Engage students in real-world applications of STEM principles, enhancing their problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and understanding of modern technological processes.
4. Promote Interdisciplinary Learning: Encourage students to connect artistic techniques with scientific principles, thereby enriching their overall educational experience and broadening their career perspectives.
5. Showcase Student Achievements: Organize exhibitions and presentations to highlight student projects, demonstrating the integration of art and science and celebrating their creative and academic achievements.
By pioneering the use of microwave raku in high school education, we seek to inspire a new generation of students, equip them with valuable skills, and foster a deeper appreciation for the intersection of technology and creativity in the world of ceramics.

Benefits to my students

Teaching our high school students Microwave Raku is essential for several compelling reasons. First, it provides a unique, hands-on experience that bridges art and science, making abstract concepts more accessible. Microwave Raku, which utilizes microwave technology to rapidly fire ceramics, integrates principles of physics and chemistry into a tangible process. Students learn about electromagnetic waves, heat transfer, and material science through practical application, enhancing their understanding of these STEM concepts in a dynamic and engaging way.
Second, this innovative technique fosters creativity and critical thinking. Students not only explore scientific principles but also apply artistic techniques to create unique ceramic pieces. This interdisciplinary approach encourages problem-solving as students experiment with different materials and firing conditions, developing their analytical skills and scientific inquiry.
Moreover, Microwave Raku offers practical benefits for classroom settings. It is a safer and more time-efficient alternative to traditional ceramic kilns, reducing the risk of accidents and minimizing wait times for firing. This makes it an ideal choice for high school environments where safety and time management are crucial.

Budget Narrative

The proposed budget for Microwave Raku encompasses essential components such as safety equipment and materials to develop curriculum. By investing in these areas, we aim to provide a robust educational experience that enhances students' understanding of both art and science, fosters creativity, and prepares them for future opportunities in STEM and the arts. This investment is crucial for implementing Microwave Raku effectively and achieving the educational goals outlined in the program
