What will be done with my students
Engaging lessons is key to student achievement. No one wants to learn about a topic that doesn't interest them. Many students are missing the background knowledge or experiences to make connections to the concepts being taught. Some students think that math just isn't for them. "I'm just not a math person" is a comment heard often in school. Why not teach math through children's literature? It offers memorable opportunities to discuss mathematical ideas and connect those ideas to meaningful contexts. This series was created by Sue O'Connell, who is nationally known for her work in mathematics education. O'Connell and her team worked in diverse schools and communities throughout the United States and selected children’s literature, developed lessons and activities, tested ideas with students, and gathered feedback from educators across the country.
Trust the research... The position of the NCTM, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, is that conceptual understanding must precede and coincide with instruction on procedures. Learning is supported when instruction on procedures and concepts is explicitly connected in ways that make sense to students (e.g., Fuson, Kalchman, and Bransford 2005; Hiebert and Grouws 2007; Osana and Pitsolantis 2013) and iterative (e.g., Canobi 2009; Rittle-Johnson, Schneider, and Star 2015). Conceptual foundations lead to opportunities to develop reasoning strategies, which in turn deepens conceptual understanding; memorizing an algorithm does not. When students use a procedure they do not understand, they are more likely to make errors and fail to notice when the answer does not make sense (Kamii and Dominick 1998; Narode, Board, and Davenport 1993).
This grant will greatly increase student engagement by providing alternative ways to teach math, reaching even more students each day. The series provides lessons and activities for each book, discussion prompts, ideas for students who need enrichment, online resources, and on-demand video coaching for teachers.
Benefits to my students
With the generous funding of this grant, students will develop a deeper connection and understanding of mathematical concepts and a love for math through literature, which will set the foundation for high academic achievement. Let's teach our kids to learn math "by the book!"
