Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Our goal is to enhance the high school ceramics curriculum by integrating the principles of centrifugal force, aligning with Florida Sunshine State Standards and promoting STEM engagement. Through hands-on mini wheel throwing activities, students will explore the physics of centrifugal force, improving their understanding of scientific concepts and their application in art. This interdisciplinary approach aims to foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, preparing students for future STEM careers and enriching their educational experience. By merging art and science, we aim to inspire a deeper appreciation for both disciplines among 9-12 grade students.

What will be done with my students

The goal of this project is to enhance the high school ceramics curriculum by integrating STEM lessons, specifically focusing on the principles of centrifugal force. This initiative aligns with the Florida Sunshine State Standards and aims to foster student engagement through interdisciplinary learning. By using hands-on mini wheel throwing activities, students will explore the physics behind centrifugal force, enhancing their understanding of scientific concepts and their application in art, thereby promoting critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Implementation Plan:
1. Equipment Acquisition:
Mini Pottery Wheels and Tools: Purchase mini pottery wheels to accommodate more students and high quality pottery tools.
STEM Instructional Materials: Acquire textbooks, videos, and software that integrate STEM concepts with ceramics.
2. Curriculum Development:
Interdisciplinary Lesson Plans: Develop a comprehensive curriculum that combines ceramics with physics, focusing on centrifugal force and other relevant STEM principles.
Educational Resources: Create detailed lesson plans, worksheets, and assessment tools that align with Florida Sunshine State Standards.
3. Classroom Activities:
Interactive Lessons: Conduct engaging lessons on centrifugal force, including live demonstrations and simple experiments to illustrate the concepts.
Hands-On Practice: Facilitate mini wheel throwing sessions where students apply STEM principles to shape clay, encouraging experimentation with different speeds and pressures.
4. Interdisciplinary Projects:
STEM-Art Projects: Design projects that require students to use their knowledge of both art and science, such as creating pottery pieces that demonstrate various aspects of centrifugal force.
Collaboration with Science Teachers: Partner with science teachers to develop joint projects that further explore the relationship between physics and ceramics.
5. Assessment and Reflection:
Formative and Summative Assessments: Implement assessments to measure students' understanding of centrifugal force and its application in ceramics.
Reflective Discussions: Facilitate sessions where students discuss their learning experiences and the connections between STEM and art.
6. Community Engagement:
Student Exhibitions: Organize exhibitions to showcase student work, highlighting the integration of STEM concepts in their ceramic creations.
7. Evaluation and Reporting:
Program Evaluation: Regularly evaluate the program's effectiveness through student feedback, teacher observations, and academic performance.
Reporting Outcomes: Compile and share reports on the program's progress and outcomes with stakeholders and use the data for future grant applications.
By implementing this comprehensive plan, we aim to create a robust and engaging ceramics program that teaches students the art of mini wheel throwing but also deepens their understanding of crucial STEM concepts, preparing them for future academic and career success.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit in many ways:
1. Enhanced Understanding of STEM Concepts:
Students will gain a deeper understanding of physics, particularly the principles of centrifugal force, through practical application in ceramics. This hands-on approach makes abstract scientific concepts more tangible and easier to grasp.
2. Interdisciplinary Learning:
By integrating STEM with art, students will learn to make connections between different fields of study, promoting a more holistic educational experience. This interdisciplinary approach encourages students to see the relevance of STEM in everyday life and various careers.
3. Increased Engagement and Motivation:
Engaging students in hands-on activities like mini wheel throwing can increase their interest and motivation in both science and art. The excitement of creating something tangible while learning about scientific principles fosters a love for learning.
4. Development of Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills:
Working with clay on the mini pottery wheel requires students to think critically and solve problems in real-time. They must adjust their techniques based on the behavior of the clay, developing important skills that are transferable to other areas of study and life.
5. Enhanced Creativity:
Combining art with STEM concepts allows students to explore their creativity in new ways. They can experiment with different shapes, designs, and techniques, encouraging innovative thinking and artistic expression.
6. Preparation for Future Careers:
Understanding the application of STEM concepts in art can open students’ eyes to a wide range of career possibilities in fields such as engineering, industrial design, and more. This program helps prepare them for future academic and career paths by providing a solid foundation in both art and science.
7. Improved Collaboration and Communication:
Many of the activities and projects will involve group work, fostering collaboration and communication skills. Students will learn to work together, share ideas, and provide constructive feedback, which are essential skills in any career.
8. Alignment with Educational Standards:
The curriculum aligns with the Florida Sunshine State Standards, ensuring that students are meeting educational benchmarks. This alignment helps ensure that the lessons are both relevant and rigorous, contributing to students' overall academic success.
9. Sense of Achievement and Confidence:
Successfully creating a piece of pottery from start to finish can give students a strong sense of accomplishment. This achievement boosts their confidence, encouraging them to take on new challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
10. Community and Cultural Appreciation:
Through exhibitions students will have opportunities to engage with the broader community and gain appreciation for different cultural perspectives in art and science. This exposure helps them develop a more global understanding and appreciation of various disciplines.
Successfully creating a piece of pottery from start to finish can give students a strong sense of accomplishment. This achievement boosts their confidence, encouraging them to take on new challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

Budget Narrative

Budget Narrative:
The requested funds will be used to purchase four mini pottery wheels and corresponding tool sets, ensuring that each table in the classroom has its own set of equipment. This setup allows for small group instruction, enabling more personalized attention and fostering a collaborative learning environment. The inclusion of high-quality clay and other materials will ensure that students have the necessary resources to fully engage in the wheel throwing process. Additionally, the shipping costs are accounted for to ensure that all materials are delivered promptly and securely.
By equipping each table with a mini pottery wheel and tools, we aim to provide students with hands-on experience in both ceramics and STEM concepts, specifically centrifugal force. This will enhance their understanding of scientific principles through practical application, promote creativity, and support the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The integration of these tools into our curriculum aligns with the Florida Sunshine State Standards and prepares students for future academic and career success.
