Goal
The Goal: is to create lifelong learners who will develop a love for World Languages and become fluent speakers. We, the World Language Teachers, (French, and Spanish) plan to incorporate Comprehensible Input (CI) Best Practice to the present curriculum.
Category
School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.
What will be done with my students
The goal is to incorporate Vista Higher learning platform (VHL) with the Best Practice of Comprehensible Input (CI) to help our students to become more efficient communicators “by encouraging them to engage in meaningful, everyday scenarios in the target language to build their communication skills.” Students will be engaged with authentic, everyday phrases and situations, to help them understand French and to be able to produce phrases after they have spent an amount of time being active and engaged listeners.
The classroom will be divided in four centers: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking with the framework of “Language Acquisition” to encourage natural communication.” Students will work in groups to “WL.K12.NM.1.2: Demonstrate understanding of everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities and needs, presented in a clear, slow, and repeated speech.” and to WL.K12.IH.4.6: Formulate and deliver a presentation on an assigned topic using multimedia resources to support the presentation.”
Reading/Writing Center: Students will write and read simple articles in French and Spanish . Students will produce the vocabulary words needed to write stories based on their likes and interests. Students can draw pictures to elaborate on the stories.
Speaking/Listening Center: Students will be able to listen to native speakers and read articles to “Demonstrate understanding of everyday expressions dealing with simple and concrete daily activities…” Students will be able to read along with the native speakers which is a great way to produce “input” by listening to “ stories, hearing everyday speech, and listening to conversations with a native speaker. “ Students will complete listening activities from VHL based on a similar theme as the article to reinforce the concepts. Students will also have meaningful conversation with their peers in the classroom.
During the Speaking Session students will begin to produce sentences on their own in addition to selected activities from VHL “on an assigned topic” with similar themes and conversing with their peers in the classroom to create a more interactive conversation with familiar vocabulary words, which is “An example of “output”.
Students will participate in conversation and respond to what the other person says in the classroom and on the VHL platform. Students will be encouraged to carefully listen to the conversation to answer or record the appropriate response. Post-it-Super Sticky Easel Pad and Sharpies will be used to help students produce their stories.
By implementing the strategies listed, students will be able to achieve the goal of becoming more efficient in communicating in French and in Spanish.
Benefits to my students
Comprehensible Input (CI) is an instructional tool that leads me to believe that I can achieve the classroom setting that I have visualized for my French Program to become more efficient communicators. Last year, my students and I were fortunate enough to receive a grant from Champions for Learning to make it possible. My AP Ftrench students who took the exam scored higher in 3 categories in comparison to all students who took the exam in Florida. The data also demonstrated that they were strong readers. This school year (2024-2025) the entire World Language Teachers (French , and Spanish) at Palmetto Ridge High School will be implementing CI in their classrooms.
Students’ communication skills will be built as they will be engaged with authentic, everyday phrases and situations, to help them understand French and to produce phrases after they have spent an amount of time being an active Reader, Writer and engaged Listener. In return students will be able to produce “ meaningful, everyday scenarios in the target language .
This Best Practice will increase an interest in Foreign Language among students who are taking French and Spanish classes which will have a global impact because “French is the official language of more than twenty-five countries and an official language of the European Union and United Nation.” Also, “French and English are the only two languages that are spoken on every continent” and “2 million or more Americans speak French…” Furthermore, Spanish is the world's second-most spoken native language after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish is the official language of 21 countries in the world. Spanish and English have coexisted in this country for nearly 400 years, when students learn how to speak and write in Spanish, they are capable to communicate with more than 400 million people, but also have the key to enter into a vast diversity of societies and cultural traditions, customs and beliefs.
To effectively learn how to write in French and Spanish the students will need sufficient Post-it-Super Sticky Easel Pad and Sharpies to produce their stories.
Having a classroom set of 30 Post-it-Super Sticky Pads and 30 Sharpies would tremendously improve the learning process. Students will be able to complete tasks such as Interpersonal Speaking/Listening; Reading/Writing: Conversation to which they have to interact to promote engagement and relatable conversation. Students will learn how to:
Understand a conversational format
Participate in a conversation
Preview the conversation before responding
Respond to what the other person says
Record their part in each conversational exchange and in addition to the Reading and Writing Centers.
Actively engaged
Take ownership of their communication skills
Post-it-Super Sticky Easel Pad and Sharpies will be used to help students master the interpersonal communication skills to write in French and in Spanish in the classroom . A skill they will be able to apply when taking the End of the Year, and their Advanced Placement exams.
