Goal

To provide additional options for student seating in the classroom, rather than just their traditional desk and chair.

Category

Class Furniture - Carpets, choral risers, transitional seating/desks, etc.

What will be done with my students

My goal is to provide various seating options for my students, rather than just their school desk and chair. This would include a couch, soft stools, and ergonomic seats. In addition, students will have the option to use a tray they can pull up to support their notebook and/or computer.
As soon as I can purchase the furniture, the students will benefit from the seating options. The best part is this will be a permanent integration into my classroom, not only benefiting the students I have for the 2024-2025 school year, but also for years to come.
The math curriculum I teach is challenging. While flexible seating options do not tie directly into the Florida math standards, it does help the students find a place in the classroom that will motivate them to do their best learning.

Benefits to my students

I teach math to multiple levels of students: students with learning disabilities, English Langage Learners, gifted students. Regardless of the student's abilities, providing options for seating in the classroom creates a welcoming environment that shows the students have choice and are part of a classroom community. Let's be honest, it's not often math teachers start the year with students who absolutely love math. My goal every year is to help students realize it's not as scary as they might think. Increasing engagement and motivation are some of the biggest challenges all teachers face. To help overcome this, students need to find the best way they learn, and for some it means not sitting in a traditional desk and chair.
Based on previous years teaching, I have found that students who feel they are respected, provided choice and are apart of the community within the classroom, are more apt to be engaged in the lessons and motivated to do their best.

Budget Narrative

The ergonomic seats (with an accordian style base) are considered "flexible active seats." Students will be able to keep both feet flat on the ground, and can move gently through a range of positions.
The Softscape Ottoman Chairs come in a set of four. These versatile soft ottomans can be used as a seat or surface for working.
The ergonomic seats and ottomans can be moved around the classroom based on need.
The upholstered sofa is large enough for 2 students to sit. The two trays can be pulled up to any of the seating options. They have adjustable height and tilt to fit the needs of the student using it. Each tray folds down, making it easier to store.
