Goal

To provide students with several high-level engagement opportunities targeting multiple senses through open-ended sensory exploration using Sensory Bins. A Sensory Bin is a container filled with materials that stimulate the senses and allow children to explore and interact with them.

What will be done with my students

Sensory bins will provide my students with the opportunity to explore and learn through hands-on tactile play that engages their senses.
Students will learn skills through sensory play, including:
• Fine motor skills: Activities such as grasping, squeezing, and searching for hidden items
• Mathematical and scientific concepts: Actions like counting, measuring, mixing, pouring, dumping, stacking, and comparing lay the groundwork for learning about math and science.
• Literacy development: Activities like identifying and arranging letters, narrating stories during play, and learning new vocabulary words contribute to literacy development.
• Social skills: Interactions involving sharing, cooperation, and working with others foster the growth of social skills.
Expectations when using the Sensory Bins will be taught and practiced to extend the life of the bins. Self-control and responsibility will be reinforced with simple, clear boundaries while allowing children the freedom and creativity to use their senses and bodies to creatively play and learn.
 

 

Benefits to my students

The benefits of sensory bins for a child’s development are numerous.
Sensory Exploration: Children engage their senses in a controlled and playful setting. This sensory stimulation helps children develop their sensory processing skills, which are essential for their overall sensory integration and cognitive development.
Fine Motor Development: Children use their hands and fingers to manipulate and explore the materials, promoting the development of fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and finger strength.
Cognitive Development: Children engage in open-ended play, where they can use their imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills to explore and manipulate the materials. This type of play promotes cognitive skills, such as critical thinking, decision-making, and planning.
Emotional Development: Engaging in sensory play can help children regulate their emotions, manage stress, and express their feelings in a supportive environment. Sensory bins can also be used as a calming and soothing activity for children who may need sensory input for self-regulation.
Social Development: Children learn teamwork, communication, and sharing when playing. When children work together, they come up with creative solutions or new ways to play.
 

 

Budget Narrative

The budgeted items include twelve Sensory Bins, a three pack set of Calming Liquid Motion Bubbler and 50 Fidget Toys.
