Goal

The goal is to increase student thinking, engagement, problem solving stamina, student discussion and increase learning by using vertical whiteboards around in the classroom.

What will be done with my students

The students will use the whiteboards around the room to show their work, strategies, and thinking as they tackle various math problems, as well as other academic tasks throughout various subject areas during the school day. Whiteboards are dynamic learning tools that actively engage students by allowing them to write, draw, list, work out mathematical problems, and show their thinking. When students use the whiteboards, they produce much better work than just working in their notebooks or books. Students can quickly erase mistakes without hindering the ability to try again. 

 

Benefits to my students

There is an abundance of benefits when students are simultaneously using whiteboards around the room. Research shows that when students are standing working on vertical whiteboards around the classroom are more actively engaged, increase their thinking, increase working time on tasks and show longer persistence on tackling problem-solving activities. Whiteboards provide plenty of space to work out problems and mistakes are easily erased. In addition, the teacher can easily see all students' work at the same time and provide immediate explicit feedback, support, praise and scaffolding.
